Prologue

Time travel, it has always been apart of our lives, in one form or another. In fiction from books like H.G. Wells “The Time Machine” to film with the “Back to the Future” trilogy and beyond.
Each one not only told of our desire to travel back and learn the truth, but they also told of our desire to change the past, to try to right what they thought was wrong. Even if that change had a bad effect on others, so what, that change needed to happen. So our desire for time travel stayed merely as fiction, never to cross the border to the realm of reality. That however would never stay the same…
In the year 1997, what everyone thought of as only fiction became in truth reality, time travel was born. A prominent scientist, trying to keep out of the spot light, had decided to work on time travel. After all, the mind set was that it was only fiction, and could never be real. He discovered the truth that time travel was indeed real, and that one could actually travel back through time.
Now like everything else in life, time travel also had rules that couldn’t ever be changed, no matter what you did, or how you traveled. Rule 1 was that, you could only travel back, not forward since the past has already been written, where as the future hasn’t happened yet. Rule 2 was that, the same matter couldn’t occupy the same space at the same time. With this rule, during the early parts of working time travel, no one had either experienced this event or witnessed it. It wouldn’t be till later events take place that this rule would prove all too true. Of course despite this second rule, time travel would still proceed on.
So thanks to time travel going public now, a police organization had to be created, one that would police all of time travel so that people couldn’t cause changes (or ripples as they would eventually be called) to the time line (or time stream). The first such one that was created was known as the “Time Enforcement Commission” or T.E.C. (it would later be changed from Commission to Control, since they seemed to have the complete control over all of time.)
Using the time travel technology, they were able to not only learn about the past, but at the some points, actually prevent different crimes from actually taking place. Slowly at first, but eventually becoming more and more known were these changes that they had to be stopped. So instead of directly stopping them, another police force was created.
This second police force was created to be a balance for the first one, it failed, they both failed, and in the end, both police forces were shut down.
However, it was known that time couldn’t be left to those that had no regulations over time at all. By this point, it was now the early 22nd century, and time travel wasn’t the only thing that was in the works to be dealt with. At the mid-way point of the 21st century, another war broke out. The third world war, the war that would change the very face of the planet, it was during this period, that time travel, while publicly shunned, was in fact secretly being used by both sides leveling the fighting field ten fold.
When the war ended, a new multi-national was founded to ensure that all major countries had a part in this new enforcement agency. Unable to come up with a proper name, the title of “Time Traveler Academy” was settled on by all.
Then came yet another wave of the future, first contact, first contact with an alien life not of Earth. During this period, the early parts of the first contact, time travel and the knowledge of it was kept away from the aliens. The thought of them using time travel against the Earth, made the people leery to let the aliens know about it.
It was soon discovered however, that many races outside of Earth had their own version of time travel as well, and had a similar fear of us using it against them as well.
During this time, space was continuing to be explored, and new races continued being discovered, a space fleet had been established, along with a type of federation to help establish a form of multi-planetary government. Once things seemed to have settled down, taking both a few centuries, and a couple of inter-planetary wars. Time travel on a major inter-planetary level started being talked about, that a police like system be setup to help keep control of time travel, and that no one be allowed to change any part of time for any reasons at all.
Since it was now being brought up on a galaxy wide level, a way of transport had to be created, and one that wouldn’t be deadly to anyone at all. Using a combination of alien technology and Earth research, a way was thought up using some fleet ships to carry what were called “Temporal Matrix Cores”. These cores allowed the ships to create tunnels of energy (similar to that of an artificial wormhole) in time. These tunnels would allow the ships to travel back through time. However just like any other start, there were problems that couldn’t be ignored at all, lest it cost lives.
The Matrix (or T.M.C.) was to be installed on four starships and tested each ship of a different design and class. Using the energy from the propulsion system, they would power the T.M.C. to open up the tunnel into time. With a fully manned ship, they powered up the T.M.C., only to receive a dangerous result. The entire ship exploded with all hands lost. It had been figured that with a fully manned ship that everything could be dealt with right then and there, plus the whole thing could be shutdown at a moments notice. That however failed the instant the power button had been pressed. So the rest of the ships were left unmanned to make sure that no one else lost their lives either. In the end, only one other ship was destroyed, the other two of the total four became completely dead of all energy; nothing could ever power them again.
It was discovered about two years later when a shuttle was experimented with. Not only did the shuttle not explode, the energy tunnel opened in front of the shuttle. Not wanting to waste the chance, they set up a recording unit, along with a timer set for five minutes after arrival to return. The shuttle was sent deep into Earth’s past, to an era that is believed not to have had any life, or much of life, at all.
Upon the shuttles return, the data that was collected proved to be most amazing, since the current generation had only heard about time travel, but had both never seen it or experienced it. Knowing that this shuttle had been to the distant past recorded both images and data from the distant past, and then returned to present said data, had been enough for everyone.
With all of the information data at hand, efforts to create a police like organization were renewed with a complete unbridled fervor and passion, likes of which hadn’t been seen since the first creation of time police with the first T.E.C. in the late twentieth to early twenty-first century. This time however, they were opening to all forms of life now, just like the space fleet is.
Soon after, an organization was created to monitor, keep track, and police any and all time activities, both past and present. With very strict rules set in place, and different H.Q.’s set up all over the galaxy, and a Time Alpha set up, every point in time of every planet was monitored, nothing was left out.
At first the organization didn’t have a name, but then someone off handedly mentioned that “They’re like a bunch of trackers of time.” So they were called Time Trackers, and the name fit for them.
So for the next 200 to 400 years, from 2397 to the present in 2643, the Time Trackers would be able to keep the peace though both the galaxy and through time. Dealing with any challenger that thought they could prove different, they were proven wrong when they faced the Time Trackers.

  1. Hi, I'm a member of the Linkedin sci-fi writers group, and you asked for a critique. I am a writer and a professional editor, so I will try to give you constructive comments. I like your idea here, of time travel and space travel. However, this prologue reads as back story and is all "telling" rather than "showing." I also noticed that you need some editing in your grammar. You jump from second person to third person, and some of your verbs and pronouns keep shifting around. For example, when you have you and they in the same sentence when speaking about the rules of time travel, or the motives of time travel. All this prologue would be more compelling if you added a human element to the origins of time travel. For example, you mention a "prominent scientist." Why not give the guy a name and say why he invented it? "Dr. Joe Brown invented time travel when he lost his wife and son in a tragic accident. He was never able to save them because of the paradox factor, but the genie was out of the bottle. Other people found a use for his invention." You see how something like this roots the origins of the time travel in a fictional reality? What you have is all theoretical. Frankly, I had to stop reading after the first 500 words, I couldn't stay focused. It was like reading a wikipedia article about some historical event. In a word, dull. (Hey, just trying to help here.) I also found the tiny white on black type difficult to read.
I think you will have to do some major revision here to get this up to TOR standards. My advice, find a good editor. I'd offer my services, but I don't want you to think this is just pandering.

    1. Actually I don’t think that you’re pandering at all, to be totally honest I read another post that was dealing with the rules of time travel that I had actually gotten from the movie Time Cop and actually made the most sense to me when I saw the part in the movie (though I have a feeling that I’m going to have to rewatch the movie to get the rules right, it seems that I screwed up when it comes to not being able to change the past, I have to reread that part and see where I screwed up there, and the part about not being able to go to the future is in the movie and I posted about that.)

Now the showing part actually comes a little later in the book during the first couple of chapters, though I didn’t get as descriptive as I should have and that’s going to be in the revised versions of the story when the time comes (believe me the current chapter 8 is getting very descriptive on everything, and it should’ve been that way at the start.).

Now I haven’t read your comments towards the first chapter, however I will, I figured that I would read this one first and give you a reply to this one before I got to the first chapter one that you made, and by the way, you’re not pandering on offering your services. Believe me at this point I actually need an editor, and I really wouldn’t mind your services either, considering that I have a feeling no one else is going to ask, they’re just going to let me flounder like crazy and then make a complete idiot of my self in the end, so no I don’t mind at all in the least. Thanks.
